Sustainable Heat from the Mountains: Pirin Pellet’s Two Decades of Local Bioenergy
Located in the town of Razlog, at the foot of the Pirin Mountains, Pirin Pellet EOOD is a Bulgarian company for the production and sale of ENplus® certified wood pellet. They built their first plant in 2004 and started operating in 2005. Today, Pirin Pellet’s impact goes beyond their company.
In the heart of the Razlog Valley
Since their early years, Pirin Pellet has been committed to promoting pellets as an eco-friendly and sustainable product for domestic and industrial use as biomass.
The reason for building the plant in this specific location was the availability of raw material – mainly conifer – and the presence of wood processing factories nearby. In the same spirit, today, Pirin Pellet is developing a market for the recovery and use of waste materials throughout their municipality, such as cleaning up local forests. Their impact in the area also affects local jobs, employing about 40 people directly, and supplying over 200 indirect jobs in a village with a population of about 13.400.
Pirin Pellet inspired other entrepreneurs in the area, who began producing pellets, making the entire southwestern mountain area of Bulgaria known for its pellet production.
Commitment to community
Every year Pirin Pellet organizes trainings and information days in elementary schools throughout the region, to teach children about pellets, use of pellets as a natural evolution of the use of firewood and all its positive aspects as an environmentally friendly energy source.
These information initiatives have resulted in the supply and use of pellets as biomass within many schools in neighboring municipalities, many hotels, hospitals, and condominiums that are starting to convert their coal or oil boilers to pellet boilers.
With over twenty-years of experience, they believe that pellet plants are the perfect fit for the Bulgarian ecosystem, providing a solution that contributes to the energy grid complementing solar energy. They are excellent for creating jobs in the area, saving people’s heating needs and have low CO2 emissions.
In conclusion, we can say that Bulgaria has great potential for biomass use.
