Turning wood resources into sustainable energy

Through its ongoing work to promote the bioeconomy and the non-food valorisation of biomass, Valbiom highlights local companies that are driving the shift toward a circular and climate-friendly energy system. This year, two remarkable actors (ITS Energy and Vanheede Logistic) demonstrated how innovation and sustainable resource management are shaping the future of bioenergy in Belgium.

From forest residues to local energy: ITS Energy

For more than a decade, ITS Energy has been a key player in the sustainable valorisation of forest resources in Wallonia. Founded in 2013, the company specialises in producing high-quality wood chips from materials traditionally considered unsuitable for industry: thin branches, irregular cuts, or other non-standard residues.

Their expertise lies in sorting and transformation, giving new life to under-used forest biomass. By turning what was once waste into a reliable local energy source, ITS Energy contributes directly to Wallonia’s energy transition while supporting a more circular regional economy.

Closing the loop for wood waste: Vanheede Logistic

A complementary vision is embodied by Vanheede Logistic, part of the Vanheede Environment Group. Vanheede manages the entire value chain for wood waste from companies across Wallonia. With a fleet of more than 300 trucks, they collect, sort, grind, dry, and screen wood residues to produce wood-energy chips that supply industrial boilers, district heating networks, and public infrastructures.

For Vanheede, every piece of discarded wood marks the beginning of a new cycle. Their model illustrates the power of circular logistics: reducing fossil energy dependence, lowering carbon emissions, and revitalising local bioenergy supply chains.

A strong message for Europe

Together, these two companies show the strength of Belgium’s bioenergy sector: local resources, local expertise, and local impact.

These portraits were made possible thanks to the support of the Plan de Relance de la Wallonie, in a media campaign coordinated by Valbiom that enabled local actors to showcase their role in building a more sustainable and circular biobased economy.
