From waste to bioenergy: How local biomass powers Portugal
Portugal is making significant progress in its energy transition, and bioenergy plays a central role in this transformation. By using locally available biomass to produce renewable heat and electricity, the country is making better use of its natural resources while strengthening its energy independence.
According to Bioenergy Europe’s Statistical Report 2025, bioenergy accounted for 41% of Portugal’s renewable energy consumption in 2023, representing 15% of the country’s total energy consumption.
Its contribution is particularly significant in heating and cooling. While 47% of Portugal’s heating and cooling consumption came from renewable sources, bioenergy provided 65% of that renewable heat, demonstrating its importance for households, businesses and industries.
To celebrate Portugal’s Bioenergy Day, the Portuguese Association of Wood and Furniture Industries (AIMMP), a member of Bioenergy Europe, shares a video highlighting how local biomass resources are transformed into renewable energy.
Local energy for local people!
As Portugal celebrates its Bioenergy Day, the examples shared by AIMMP demonstrate how local biomass resources can provide renewable warmth, support communities and contribute to a more energy-independent future.
