A regional conference heralds a new chapter for the Greek forestry bioenergy sector

On 14 May 2024, the inaugural Regional Biomass Forum organized by the Hellenic Biomass Association (HellaBiom), in partnership with Advantage Austria, the Austrian Embassy in Greece, and the Austrian Biomass Association (ABA) took place in Larisa, Greece, attracting more than 220 live participants and 80 online ones.

The event brought together various stakeholders from businesses, local governments, research institutions, forestry services and cooperatives, energy communities, equipment manufacturers, biomass producers, and others along the biomass value chain. The forum was preceded by a formal institutional meeting at the Greek Ministry of Environment & Energy on May 13th.

The forestry sector plays a critical role in advancing sustainable solutions, addressing climate change, and supporting the bioeconomy. As the world seeks innovative solutions for renewable energy and resource management, fostering cooperation and open discussion among stakeholders becomes essential.

Founded in 1951, Carbotermo began as an energy manager using coal-powered plants. Initially, it provided energy mainly to residential buildings with coal. Over the years, it transitioned to diesel, then natural gas, and most recently, has introduced various renewable energy sources, primarily biomass, including wood chips, pellets, etc., depending on the size of the application.

The core of the Parco Nord project involved installing a 2 MW woodchip heating plant to replace two natural gas boilers. The original boilers had a combined power of over 4 MW, but due to increased efficiency, the new 2 MW system is sufficient.
