A Model of Sustainable Bioenergy in Jēkabpils: SIA “OŠUKALNS” Cogeneration Plant
In Latvia’s bioenergy scene, the cogeneration plant built by SIA “OŠUKALNS” in 2011 powers both people and sustainability. Located in Jēkabpils, the plant has become a local symbol of how smart technology and care for the environment can work together to help an entire city.
The plant can produce enough electricity to supply about 4,000 households and keep 2,000 apartments warm through the district heating network. This thanks to a total installed capacity of 6.7 MW, with 1.4 MW of electricity generation capacity and thermal capacity of 5.3 MW.
Most of the generated heat fuels the company’s production, especially for drying wood for high-quality products. A share of the heat is also supplied to the Jēkabpils city to keep its citizens warm through the cold winter. Similarly, the electricity generated is first used to meet the company’s production needs, then the surplus is fed into Latvia’s national grid, making the country’s energy system stronger and more independent.
In this system, nothing goes to waste. Wood residues generated during logging and wood processing, which cannot be used in primary production, are fully utilised for energy generation. This reduces production costs, increases the company’s competitiveness, and ensures reliable, sustainable, and affordable heat supply both for the company and the city throughout the year.
The wood used by the plant is obtained through the highest standards. In fact SIA “OŠUKALNS” also holds a SURE (Sustainable Resources Verification Scheme) certificate, which guarantees that biomass sourcing and energy production are carried out in accordance with strict European Union requirements. The SURE certification ensures that the biomass used by the company is obtained legally, sustainably, and in an environmentally responsible manner, while also upholding principles of social responsibility and ensuring economic sustainability.
The company’s experience demonstrates that bioenergy can reduce carbon emissions while simultaneously providing communities with a stable, secure and affordable energy supply.
