Wood chip upcycling – The Path to a Regional Energy Cycle
The Moser family and their company „Der Hackschnitzler“ („the wood chipper”) have dedicated themselves to raw material wood and the production of renewable energy.
By sustainably utilizing regional resources, the company makes a significant contribution to value creation in the Murau district of Styria, Austria.
In 2007, Moser acquired his first mobile wood chippers, followed by a wide range of specialized equipment. Since 2012, the company has continuously invested in photovoltaic systems and biomass cogeneration plants to meet its own electricity needs at its two locations in St. Lambrecht and Neumarkt.
In 2020, Moser decided to expand the company’s product portfolio to include pellets. “This was a natural step for us, as we have long maintained strong partnerships with agricultural and forestry operations in the heavily forested Murau region,“explains Moser.
“By building a pellet plant with downstream wood-fired power generation, which went into operation in February 2023, we can now use our own wood chips as a base for pellet production, and upcycling them into sustainable organic pellets and significantly increasing their value.”
“By relying wood chips, we can meet most of our raw material requirements independently, needing only a small amount of sawdus – making us largely self-sufficient and less dependent on the sawmill industry,” Moser adds.
The electricity generated in the wood gas power plants is used to supply the entire operation; any surplus is fed into the grid. The heat produced is used to dry the wood chips. “Our internal energy cycle integrates with the regional energy cycle to form a bigger whole,” explains Moser. “By using local waste wood, we enhance its value—creating benefits for agricultural and forestry businesses across the region. Our surplus green electricity helps stabilize the regional power grid, and local residents can purchase sustainably and regionally produced pellets directly from us.“
