Local bioenergy boosts industries in Estonia. In fact, Estonia offers several successful examples of industrial decarbonisation, in particular thanks to a cleaner energy supply and a more circular approach to resources management. 

Local bioenergy decarbonising industries: Saku Õlletehas

In Estonia, industries are increasingly replacing oil and fossil gas in their energy supply with alternative clean solutions, including biomass. For example, Saku Õlletehas, one of the two largest beer producers in Estonia, recently invested 2.5 million euros in new pellet boilers. The boilers will reliably cover the entire heat demand of the factory, which amounts to approximately 13–15 gigawatt hours per year. The move instantly helped reduce the company’s CO₂ emissions by 95% and represents a big step towards achieving net zero emissions across the company’s entire value chain by 2040.

Decarbonising production through a circular approach: Pärnu Metsä

The Pärnu Metsä Wood’s plywood mill on the other hand provides a perfect example of circular resources management and industrial symbiosis. The wood chips generated as a by-product of plywood production at the factory are transported only two kilometers to Gren’s combined heat and power (CHP) plant, where the wood leftovers are utilized for heat, steam, and electricity production, thus fulfilling the energy needs of the Metsä Wood mill as well as providing heat to the district heat consumers in the city of Pärnu.

Enabling decarbonisation and strengthening competitiveness with bioenergy

These are not just climate investments. Unlike imported fossil gas, the price of domestic resources is stable, and the supply risk is low. Transitioning to local bioenergy therefore gives industries more security for the future.
